Behaviour is a message
Almost all difficult behaviour is the expression of a need or a defence. The teacher’s job is not to suppress the behaviour but to read the message.
| Behaviour | Usually underneath | First move |

| Silence | Fear of being wrong, feeling inadequate | Low-risk question, option to answer in writing, wait time |
| Constant talking | Anxiety, need for approval, filling the gap | Structured turns, time limits, a written task |
| Indifference | Protecting oneself before failing | A small, certainly achievable task |
| Never doing homework | Homework too big, no time, or no apparent point | Shrink it and explain its purpose |
| Lateness / cancellations | Priority has dropped, or lessons feel draining | An open conversation; rebuild the value of the lesson |
