Scope, Referral and Emergencies

Every educator has an area of expertise, and every area has a limit. A good educator isn't the one who solves everything. It's the one who knows where to stop and can safely refer the participant to the right person.

  • Cambridge framework: Professional development and values
  • Turkish MoNE competency area: Professional values — ethical and legal responsibility
An educator introduces a participant to another professional.
When a need exceeds your role, help the participant find appropriate support. The images in this module are illustrative scenes created with AI.

In this module

  • Define the limits of your own expertise clearly
  • Make a referral respectfully, without hurting the participant
  • Tell an ordinary difficulty apart from an emergency
  • Collect sensitive information such as health data correctly, and as little as possible

What is scope of practice?

Your scope of practice is the limit of the work your training, qualifications and experience entitle you to do. A language teacher teaches language; a dietitian gives nutrition counselling; a yoga teacher teaches safe movement. These limits aren’t a restriction; they are a frame that protects both the participant and you.

In Turkey, diagnosing illness, recommending treatment or advising on medication is the work of licensed health professionals only. Changing your title (“life coach”, “awareness guide”) doesn’t change that rule.

Art tools, a notebook and materials sit inside a wooden tray, with a closed folder outside.
Provide support that fits your training, competence and role.
A quick test: Can you say “I am trained and qualified to do this”? If not, the topic is outside your scope.
