Teaching Online

Almost every lesson at Bir Adım İleri happens online. An online lesson is not an in-person lesson moved to a screen: gaze, attention, setting and trust all work by different rules here. This is the module experienced teachers most often skip.

Why online teaching is more tiring

What makes online teaching hard is not the internet but nonverbal overload. Face to face, body language, distance, gaze and gesture are processed almost unconsciously. On screen they are either lost or distorted — and the mind works constantly to close the gap.

Research at Stanford attributes this fatigue to four mechanisms:

  • Excessive close-up eye gaze: on screen every face sits at a distance that would count as very close in real life, and is turned towards you continuously. The body reads this as an intense social situation.
  • Cognitive load: producing and reading nonverbal signals now takes conscious effort. You nod more visibly and exaggerate gestures — and that tires you.
  • Constant self-monitoring: seeing your own face for hours is like teaching in front of a mirror, and it raises self-evaluation.
  • Restricted movement: the camera frame pins you to one spot; the pacing that is natural in a room disappears.
In practice: hide self-view, come out of full-screen, move the camera further away if you can, and physically step away from the screen between lessons. These are not comfort settings but performance settings — a tired teacher notices less.
